How to Choose the Right Online Course for Your Goals

With so many course options available, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Here's a simple framework to help you decide.

1. Start with your goal, not the course title. Are you trying to get a new job, start a business, build a portfolio, or learn something for personal growth? Your goal determines what "right" looks like; a beginner-friendly overview course is very different from a job-ready, project-based one.

2. Check the course structure. Look for clarity: How long does it run? Is it live (cohort-based) or self-paced? Will you build real projects, or just watch videos? Courses with structure and accountability tend to have far higher completion rates.

3. Look at who's teaching it. An instructor with real, practical experience will teach you things a textbook can't. Look for instructor backgrounds, not just course descriptions.

4. Consider your schedule honestly. A 12-week intensive won't work if you can only commit two hours a week. Match the course pace to your actual life, not your ideal one.

5. Prioritise outcomes over hype. A good course tells you clearly what you'll be able to do by the end of it. If a course can't answer "what will I be able to do after this?", keep looking.
